Leopards Win Away |
A cold bright morning
in Hadleigh and a match against Benfleet Villa Tigers. |
With Jack Farrier
captain for the day, the Leopards played the first half up a
slight hill and into the wind. The first 5 minutes were all in
the Leopards half as the Tigers made a bright start. Max
Schefer and Luke Whitelock in defence were called into early
action but with the help of the midfield, ensured that no-one
troubled Liam Gutteridge in goal. |
The Leopards started
to attack, spurred on by some good runs by Daniel Wolfendale.
The Tigers found the way to stop him by giving a foul on the
edge of their own area. Daniel himself stepped to take it and
his low shot evaded the entire defence and keeper’s dive and
ended up in the bottom corner. |
The Tigers did not
give up and continued to play some good football. However, they
could not get past a strong midfield with Tom West making some
excellent tackles down the right and Billy Thorn sweeping up.
Max and Luke kept their positions well, protecting the Leopards
goal. Only once did the Tigers break through one on one with
our keeper and Liam rushed out to narrow the angle and the
striker shot wide. |
Towards the end of
the half, after more Leopards pressure and a couple of corners,
Jack broke free on the right and moved towards their area. He
was pushed from behind but the referee played on. The ball ran
to Luke in their area who had escaped the shackles of defence to
fire home our second goal. |
The second half saw
Jacob Howe and Josh Scanlan replace Billy and Daniel. Max and
Luke, now playing in midfield, made some good attacking runs and
the Leopards looked in control. One fine run by Max saw him
free down the right and put in a good cross that Jacob just
failed to get on the end of. |
At the other end, the
Tigers No 8, a sprightly lass, was starting to give the defence
of Josh and Jack some problems. However, with the defensive
help of Liam, they managed to contain her. |
The match looked set
to end 2-0. Billy and Daniel came back on to replace the tiring
Max and Jack. Jacob won a free kick in a good position and a
couple of other attacks from the Leopards and it all seemed
over. However, with only a minute to go, the Leopards midfield
and defence switched off leaving a lone Tiger to run at an
exposed Tom and find the bottom corner. 2-1. |
However, there was no
panic from the Leopards and Billy almost restored the two goal
advantage at the very end. |
So 2-1 and a good,
controlled, performance. Luke won man of the match for some
solid defending and a fine goal. |
