Leopards have tough game at
Gunners |
|
|
Another away match,
this time at distant Shoeburyness. We left in convoy and
arrived in pieces – things didn’t get much better from then on. |
|
|
|
|
|
We started the first
half positively against the Gunners. Billy Thorn, Jack Farrier
and Daniel Wolfendale in midfield saw a lot of early ball but we
failed to make enough inroads into their goal area. The Gunners
found their feet and started to dominate the attack. In
particular, they had a few large lads who had long kicks and
throws on them. |

|
|
|
However, even though
under pressure, the Leopards defended really well with Tom West
and Josh Scanlan keeping position and making a number of
well-timed and important tackles. At one stage the Leopards
defended four corners in a row but still didn’t crack. Leopards
made the occasional foray into the Gunners half; one lovely
one-two between Billy and Jacob Howe sent Billy away but close
was not good enough. At the other end, the home team continued
to attack and Luke Whitelock made a couple of good saves in
succession. The half ended with the Gunners hammering a shot
against the post and a scramble in the Leopards area, again well
defended. |

Pleased to have
survived the first half pressure and having defended well, the
Leopards were looking forward to playing down the slight slope
in the second. A couple of changes were made – Kevin Ceraj on
for Jacob and Liam Gutteridge on for Jack. Disaster struck
early on. Leopards gave the ball away from kick off and the new
defence of Kevin and Liam could only watch as a surging Gunners
run ended up with a deflected shot past Billy into the goal.
1-0 down and only 10 seconds played. |

|
From then on, it was
all Gunners and the Leopards first half discipline started to
fall away. The big forward started to dominate and soon scored
a second. Billy made a number of good saves and both Liam and
Kevin worked hard in defence. However, when they got the ball,
the Leopards couldn’t break out of their half and the ball
quickly came back. Josh up front and Daniel in centre midfield
worked hard and started a couple of attacks but no shots on goal
resulted. |

A Gunner forward
surged into the box again and then crumpled on the ground
holding his leg. Was any contact made? The referee played on.
While players and spectators waited for the game to be stopped
so the injured player could receive attention, the Gunners took
the opportunity to put another into the onion bag! |

Time to make changes
and Jacob and Jack came back on for Joshua and Tom. An injury
to Kevin soon saw Tom back on the pitch though. Another Gunners
attack and more surprising refereeing as a sure-fire penalty was
deemed to be outside the area and the Gunners shot wide from the
resulting free kick. At the other end, a run by Jacob was ended
by a scything tackle. Time for the Gunners to make it 4-0. |

Disappointing but
some positives. Tom won man of the match as reward for getting
stuck in a working hard. |
