Forest on Fire!

The game started after heavy rainfall the night before. It was cold but the sun was out and pitch was firm. Runwell passed the ball around well but Forest Glade seemed to be winning more of the ball in the midfield and created the first few chances. The away team were playing against the strong wind in the first half and this appeared to assist the home team, with some long balls over the Forest Glade midfield and some long goal kicks. However, it was Forest Glade who took the initiative. After a few pieces of scrappy play in the midfield, Forest Glade won a corner. George who was playing in defence, picked up the ball up on the edge of the penalty box, shaped up to shoot with his right. He then cut back onto his left and hit a peach of a shot that curled away from the goalkeeper into the top right hand corner. Forest Glade had the lead.

Within a few more minutes, Forest Glade were pressing again and Robbie put in a wonderful cross from the right wing, this evaded all the players except for Daniel who had made a great run in to the back post and on the volley smashed a great low shot across the goalkeeper into the far corner. It was a great goal! The score was 0 – 2 after 15 minutes. Runwell kept battling and did not drop their heads. One of these attacks found Forest Glade short of players at the back. A couple of nice passes and then a shot from the left hand side of the penalty box flew past Oliver leaving him no chance. Runwell had scored, it was 1 – 2. Runwell had another chance before half time, hitting the post.

Forest Glade brought on Matthew for the 2nd half, making his debut. He was playing in defence but got forward at every opportunity. Forest Glade were stringing more passes together. There were several corners and half chances. One of these attacks involved the ball coming back to edge of the penalty box. Wayne picked the ball up, evaded 2 of the home team’s defenders and then struck the ball with his right foot. The ball soared above the goalkeeper’s hand and went in the top left corner just under the cross bar. It was 1 – 3.

Within minutes, Forest Glade attacked again. This time, Matthew collected the ball in virtually the same position. He shaped to shoot with his right and then cut the ball back onto his left. Matthew shot with his left foot. The ball kept rising straight towards the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper raised his hand to try and tip it over the crossbar, but the ball flew past into the roof of the net. Forest Glade were now leading 1 – 4. Runwell still did not give up, knowing they still had 20 minutes to go. Runwell created a couple of chances but Oliver made several comfortable saves. Soon after, Forest Glade attacked again. The ball broke free in the penalty box and Matthew was the first to reach the loose ball. He poked it in to the right corner, scoring his 2nd goal on his debut, and the away team’s fifth.

There were no more goals despite several more chances at both ends. Runwell in particular had a good chance. A striker hit the ball firmly from inside the box and Oliver needed to firmly parry the ball away to his left.
