Forest Battle @ Benfleet

The game was played in horrendous conditions and could have had an impact on either side and a simple mistake could have proved costly to either team.

We started the game playing up the slope into the wind with the rain lashing towards us. Robie started in a defensive position as we knew this could be where the game would be difficult in the the first half. Robie played a fantastic Captains role breaking up the play and winning many tackles to stop Benfleet in dangerous areas. The defence was magnificent in the first half and battled hard to withstand great pressure from Benfleet. We were using Max and Daniel effectively on the wings and Daniel on a few occasions beat his man down the line and got some great crosses into the danger areas.

Our moment came just before half time; Charlie played a super ball, splitting the defenders which Shaun chased onto. Shaun battled with the last Defender and just toe poked the ball before the player, this gave us the advantage. Shaun then beat the goal-keeper to his right but was now moving to his own left away from the goal. He somehow from an acute angle with his left foot, pulled a shot back across goal into the far corner of the net, evading the lunges of the 2 retreating defenders to give us a great lead at half time. 1-0! It was a shear peice of brilliant team play.

We started to have more possession in the second half, although Benfleet looked more and more dangerous on the counter. We were winning the first time tackles all over the field which was key. Robie now playing up front and had a great chance to get a goal however the goalkeeper pushed his shot wide after a well crafted opportunity had given us a one on one. Max had a good effort from outside the box which the keeper somehow clawed around the post. The keeper was in inspired form.

Our moment came when with minutes to go our pressure finally payed off. Max found himself inside the box around the penalty area and he shot wide of the keeper who still somehow managed to get his hand to the ball, however he could only push the ball into the side netting, 2-0!

It was a hard fought victiory in extremely difficult conditions, the boys fully earned this result as the attitude was first class and they battled till the end.
